Environmental Impact
One of the main environmental concerns often raised by e.g.
WWF is the reliance on wild caught fish as an ingredient in Salmon feed.
It is argued that the wild caught fish should be used directly for human consumption, and by using wild catch in the feed salmon farming is contributing to the global problem with overfishing.
The argument definitely has historical merit, as salmon farming earlier had a FIFO (fish-in-fish-out) ratio of four (4) or five (5), meaning that four (4) or five (5) of wild caught fish was used to produce one (1) kg of salmon.
Salmon farmers have worked actively on substituting marine protein with plant-based protein.
The newest research in the field suggests that the FIFO ratio is now one (1) or just below one (1), meaning salmon farming is now easing the strain on the wild fish populations.
